You have a name. Before you print it on anything, you want it everywhere: the .com, the X handle, the YouTube channel, the shop. Checking thirty sites by hand takes an hour, and you still miss some.
So you search "username checker", paste the name in, and get a wall of green ticks. Most of those ticks are guesses.
It asks each platform for the profile page, site.com/yourname. If the page comes back as "not found", it calls the name free.
site.com/yourname
That works on sites that answer a stranger honestly. Plenty don't. Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and Reddit show a server the same login wall for every name, taken or not. Some sites send a bare page to anything that looks like a bot. A checker that reads "no profile here" as "free" will happily tell you a famous brand's name is up for grabs.
We built a free handle checker into SPOE this week, and testing it on real names turned up exactly that.
A bare page that looks like a missing one. Asked from our server, twitch.tv/nike came back as a page titled plain "Twitch", the same page a name nobody owns gets. Nike's channel exists. A naive checker says "free". Twitch and Pinterest now come with a link instead of a guess.
twitch.tv/nike
A closed shop still owns its name. netflix.myshopify.com answers 404, and so does a name nobody ever registered. Look closer and they differ: a closed store says "This store will be right back". Its address is still held. Only Shopify's own "Not Found" means nobody has it.

Renamed accounts and capital letters. On DEV, dev.to/stripe sends you on to the account that renamed from it, so the name is held, but DEV's user lookup says nobody is there. On Hacker News, names are case-sensitive: "netflix" is free while "Netflix" belongs to someone. For a brand, that's taken.

Every platform gets a canary: a name that is certainly taken, like nike, elonmusk or github. Before SPOE believes a platform's "free", it checks that the same platform still calls the canary taken. If a platform starts blocking our server, or answers every name alike, its row switches to "check yourself" with a one-click link. It never shows a wrong "free".
Platforms that refuse every check from another site (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Threads, Reddit, Etsy and a few more) are always links, never guesses. The domains are asked of their registries directly, the same RDAP record every registrar reads, with a price where one is listed.
The name you type isn't stored or logged. It's free and needs no sign-up: spoe.ai/handle-checker.
Most short names are taken somewhere. That's fine. You need the same name on the places your customers actually are, not on all thirty.
Claim the domain, then the two or three platforms you'll actually post on, then the rest in one sitting so nobody slips in between. Use the same picture and the same one-line bio on every profile. People should know it's you at a glance.
A name with nowhere to send people isn't worth much. Once you have it, SPOE can build the page: describe it in a sentence, and an HTML site goes live at yourname.spoe.dev in seconds, or on your own domain. The code is yours to download and host anywhere.
Check your name, then start free and build its website.
